Best Sunday Game Ever.

My friends Mel and Brian and I went to see the Basquiat Exhibit in the Brook yesterday and we went to the park to have a catch. A couple of kids stopped by to ask is they could have a few throws and catches. So we let them use our equipment and we taught them a few things about throwing and catching. It was easily one of the greatest experiences of my life and I realized that when I’m older, I will most likely be that really mellow little league coach everyone had. Unless I’m single and miserable, I’ll be Morris Buttermaker from the Bad News Bears instead, drinking in the dugout and yelling at the kids. I could have hung out for hours teaching these kids the fundamentals. (Is it sad that when i hear Les Toreadors, I think of baseball bloopers?)
Something about yesterday that really bothered me was that these kids had never had a chance to play catch with a glove. Baseball equipment is expensive but New York City does not do enough to make it possible. When’s the last time you saw a little league game in central park? You never see that because the corporate leagues pay to use the fields for their tournaments. Not cool. I think if you want to be in a corporate league and use the fields, you should pay a hefty fee that helps finance little leagues.
Needless to say, Melanie and I were saying that there should be a non-profit organization that does this and makes little league a possibility for every kid that wants to play. It is, after all, the American Pasttime. (That said, Yankees suck.)
I’m in a wacky mood. Someone buy me a drink.
